MANILA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in the Philippines on an official two-day visit.

This marks his fifth visit to ASEAN countries since his appointment as Prime Minister late last year.

The visit is expected to further strengthen the relationship between Malaysia and the Philippines and contribute to ASEAN's cooperation and integration efforts.

Anwar was accompanied by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, as they landed at Villamor Air Base at 12.50 pm.

Upon their arrival, they were greeted by Rexlon Gatchalian, the Philippines' Social Welfare and Development Secretary and miniter-in-attendance.

The arrival ceremony began with the playing of Malaysia's national anthem, Negaraku, followed by the Philippines' national anthem, Lupang Hinirang (Chosen Land).

Anwar will be officially welcomed at Malacanang Palace later in the evening, followed by a courtesy call on Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The two leaders will hold a bilateral meeting, which will be followed by a joint press briefing.

Tomorrow, Anwar is scheduled to deliver a public lecture on "30 Years after Asia's Renaissance: Strategic Takeaways for ASEAN" at the University of the Philippines.

Established in 1908, the university is the country's national university.

During his visit to the university, he will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the university's senate and will also meet with Malaysians residing in the Philippines.

The prime minister is expected to depart for Malaysia later in the evening.
