Be vigilant against negative influences from Social media

KOTA KINABALU: The younger generation is encouraged to be vigilant against mental colonization by foreign influences, especially in light of today's overwhelming surge of borderless information.
The Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Datuk Redonah Bahanda, stated that the use of social media among society today makes it difficult to block outside influences.
She expressed concern that various negative elements could affect the minds of youth, thereby undermining their identity and leading to moral and social decay.
"Being the younger generation, students must realise that in this era of globalization, they must have mental resilience to face challenges involving mental colonization by foreign influences.
"All students need to equip themselves with a strong sense of patriotism to become more competitive and dynamic," she said.
She made these remarks during the launch of the National Month Programme at the Open Hall of Sekolah Kenangsaan Lampada Kota Marudu yesterday.
Redonah emphasised that students must be wise and mature in discerning what is beneficial and what is detrimental to their lives.
"Never allow yourselves to be easily influenced by negative behaviors such as fighting, succumbing to peer pressure, stealing, consuming alcohol, reckless driving, or invading dormitories."
"These actions reveal how our minds can be swayed by harmful elements. It is essential that we support one another; if friends express such intentions, we should advise each other and strive to avoid disciplinary actions from the school," she stressed.
In the spirit of Independence Month, she urged the younger generation to understand and truly appreciate the significance of independence for themselves and their families.
She noted that through knowledge and a clear understanding of a country's origins, citizens—especially the youth—can grasp the importance of preserving national harmony and sovereignty, and be prepared to defend it in any way necessary.
"As citizens, we should feel fortunate to be part of a sovereign and independent nation, where we can live in a harmonious, peaceful, and prosperous environment.
"Thanks to our independence, the people of this country enjoy a comfortable, harmonious, and thriving life, fostering tolerance and unity among diverse communities. Unity is a priceless treasure," she remarked.
Redonah further stated that the spirit of patriotism does not arise spontaneously; it must be nurtured, cultivated, and preserved within each individual, ensuring that Malaysia's independence can be defended indefinitely, even at the cost of life, dignity, and well-being.
She added that by raising the Jalur Gemilang (the Malaysian flag), we foster a sense of unity among all, regardless of our religious backgrounds, skin color, rank, or status.
"Together we stand strong; divided we fall. This saying powerfully illustrates our need for unity. History has shown that the greatness of an empire rests not only on wise leadership but also on a shared identity and the unity of its people," she concluded.
