PENAMPANG: Ronnie Onginjan, a virgin coconut oil producer from Kampung Kimihang in Kudat, is increasingly distressed by bands of monkeys that have been marauding into his coconut groves.

Ronnie, who cultivates his own coconut plantation and carefully harvests mature coconuts to produce his high-quality virgin coconut oil, explained that these pests are destroying young coconuts by plucking them from the trees and throwing them to the ground. This relentless behaviour has caused significant damage to his crops, severely affecting his livelihood.

His operates a small-scale factory, which serves as a fascinating destination for tourists eager to witness the traditional, hands-on process of oil extraction, also welcomes students from local higher education institutions. Many come to learn about sustainable agricultural practices and traditional craftsmanship, making Kimihang a centre of cultural and educational interest.

Kampung Kimihang itself is a peaceful and welcoming community, renowned for the warmth and friendliness of its residents, as well as its stunning natural surroundings. The tranquil village atmosphere, combined with the unique opportunity for visitors to observe the oil-making process, makes it a popular spot for both tourists and learners alike.

However, Ronnie’s business has recently faced a serious setback due to the ongoing monkey problem.

This situation has severely impacted his production and profitability, threatening the livelihood he has built on his family’s land, as well as the tourism element that adds value to his factory. Ronnie is now desperately seeking a solution to protect his crops and ensure the future of his business, which is vital not only to him personally but also to the local economy.

Due to the shortage of coconuts from his own grove, Ronnie explained that he has had to source coconuts from neighbouring districts such as Kota Marudu and Sandakan, which further increases costs.

“There are several other coconut plantation owners in the area who are equally unhappy with the current situation. We all hope that this issue can be resolved as soon as possible. If not, our livelihood, along with the local economy will be severely impacted,” he stated.

He urgently calls on the relevant authorities to intervene and address the problem, so that normalcy can be restored and the community’s livelihoods protected.
