PENAMPANG: Penampang Member of Parliament Datuk Ewon Benedick chaired a meeting of state government coalition party leaders to discuss the appointment of village chiefs in the Penampang area.

Ewon, who is also the President of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO), said that during the meeting, he listened to the views and suggestions of all party leaders to ensure that the appointment of village chiefs in the area is carried out through a consultative process, allowing each party to play a collective role.

"I agree that all parties supporting the government should have a role in the appointment of grassroots political positions, including in the Native Court.

"In political appointments, nothing is perfect, but we must carry out these appointments collectively, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and power-sharing between GRS and PH," he said after the meeting at Hotel D'Arc, here, yesterday.

Ewon, who is also the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, said that the meeting also agreed on the need to add positions such as District Chiefs, Native Chiefs, Deputy Native Chiefs, Village Chiefs, and Chinese Kapitans due to population growth, the expansion of the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), and the upgrading of the District Council to a Municipal Council.

"I will follow up on the decisions of this meeting with the leadership of the State Government, relevant ministries, and departments before convening the next meeting regarding the appointment of all village chief positions in Penampang," he said.

Also present were Kapayan State Assembly Member Jannie Lasimbang, Senator Datuk John Ambrose, UPKO Penampang Chief Datuk Donald Mojuntin, as well as divisional leaders from the GRS, STAR, PBS, PKR, SAPP, and PBRS.
