KOTA KINABALU: The Kadazandusun Murut Sabah Welfare and Education Association (Pekadin) has appealed to the Ministry of Education to open up "a window of opportunity" for Postgraduate Diploma in Education holders from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to become grade DG41 teachers through a special “one-off” recruitment drive soon.

In making the call, Pekadin vice-president Simon Molubi said based on the feedback, many graduates of the postgraduate Diploma in Education from the university were disappointed as their applications for the post of DG41 Education Services Officer were previously unsuccessful.

"It is inappropriate to completely sideline them the opportunity to become teachers. On top of that, we were made to understand that one of the unsuccessful applicants possesses excellent academic qualification, namely a First Class Bachelor's Degree.

"Therefore, Pekadin would like to appeal to the Education Ministry not to sideline them during the upcoming special “one-off” recruitment drive," he said in a statement today.

Simon was commenting on the statement by Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin yesterday on the matter.

Mohd Radzi was quoted as announcing that the MoE would be hiring 18,702 grade DG41 teachers through the special “one-off” recruitment drive.

Mohd Radzi said this was to address the shortage of teachers in the country, especially in four states and for certain subjects.

Radzi listed Selangor, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak as the states that are in dire need of new teachers.
