HIGH TIDES IN SEVERAL DISTRICTS IN SABAH

KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans living near the sea are in high alert after several districts in Sabah have been experiencing high tide since yesterday.

Among the affected are areas in Tanjung Aru Baru village. The phenomenon has caused damage to several houses.

A video showing sea water overflowing to the roads at Tanjung Lipat, Likas was also widely circulated on social media since 7 pm last night, raising concerns among residents near the area.

Several Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) members were also present at the scene manning the traffic.

The video also showed several road users stopping by the roadside to see and film the phenomenon.

Police however managed to control the situation and had ordered the public to not stop by as they pass along the road.

It was reported that several other places in Sandakan and Pekan Kecil Menumbok were also affected by similar phenomenon.

Abdul Rahman Mohd Taib, a resident in Menumbok when contacted said the high tide started to rise around 10 pm but receded an hour later.

“So far no house has been affected by the high tide. This depends on the weather, usually when there are big waves there will be several houses affected,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sabah Meteorological Department director Amir Zudi Hashim explained that the overflowing of sea waters was caused by high tide, strong winds and rough seas.

"We do not know how long the high tide will last, but the situation usually becomes normal a few hours later and it will probably eventually subside.

"The rate of the increasing water level also depends on the current situation. If the tide is higher, then the overflow will also occur," he said when contacted, last night.
