Jazz and conservation to coalesce for a worthy cause

SANDAKAN: Arts and conservation can collaborate effectively to raise awareness about environmental preservation while simultaneously promoting tourism.
Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Sandakan Member of Parliament said Sepilok Jazz is an example of how this can work in driving local economies and putting Sabah on the map as a destination for eco-tourism and cultural experiences.
She will attend the Sepilok Jazz 3rd Edition as the Guest of Honour.
Organised by Friends of Sea Turtles Education and Research (FOSTER), the event will take place on 6 and 7 September 2024 at the Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sandakan and aims to raise funds for sea turtle conservation on Libaran Island.
“As a representative of the people, I am committed to supporting such initiatives, which not only protect our wildlife but also celebrate our rich cultural heritage," she added.
During a meeting with Vivian on 22 August, FOSTER lead by it's President Alexander Yee, shared their enthusiasm on the upcoming event.
Alexander emphasised the importance of public support, stating that every ticket purchased contributes directly to the continuation of FOSTER’s sea turtle conservation programs.
"The public's support is essential to keeping our conservation programs alive. Every ticket sold represents a step toward protecting our endangered sea turtles, ensuring their survival for future generation."
“We hope people will come for the jazz and leave with a sense of contribution to something bigger." Alexander added.
This year’s Sepilok Jazz 3rd Edition is part of the Sandakan Festival Calendar 2024, approved by the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS).
Not only does the event help sustain FOSTER’s sea turtle conservation work, but it also aims to boost Sandakan’s tourism and inspire the younger generation to appreciate both conservation and jazz music, nurturing their talents to new heights.
FOSTER thanked Vivian Wong for her unwavering support of their conservation mission and for championing a future where Sandakan’s cultural and environmental heritage is preserved and celebrated.
