KING WANTS SPECIAL PARLIAMENT SITTING BEFORE AUG 1 - SPEAKERS

KUALA LUMPUR: King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has asked that a special parliamentary sitting be held before August 1 in accordance with the provisions of the existing law, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker president Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun.

In a joint statement today, they stated that the proposal has been submitted to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin following an audience with the King yesterday.

"At the ceremony, His Majesty has expressed his view that the parliamentary session should be held before Aug 1.

"Both the speakers of the Senate and Dewan Rakyat uphold the order of His Majesty and have expressed full commitment and readiness on parliament reconvening," they asserted.

Earlier, Muhyiddin stated that parliament could reconvene by September at the earliest, providing the average number of daily new coronavirus infections fell to under 2,000 cases.
