Muhyiddin admits he has no majority, time to step down - Ewon

KOTA BELUD: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin has today admitted that he has lost support of majority in Parliament and therefore he should resign, said Vice President of Upko Datuk Ewon Benedick.

On that account, he said the Article 43 of the Federal Constitution should be exalted and dignified so that someone who is more competent can be appointed to manage the national crisis.

In his special address earlier, Muhyiddin has appealed to members of parliament (MPs) across party lines to support his government in an upcoming confidence vote.

"If he had said this as soon as he was sworn in as Prime Minister early last year, it seems that the bi-partisan offer he put forward today could make sense.

"But he has already lost his support of majority to remain as Prime Minister which he had admitted in the televised address earlier.

"When he was sworn as a member of the Dewan Rakyat and Prime Minister, the oath of allegiance to uphold the Federal Constitution was made before the Speaker and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, That is what he has to do now.

"Under Article 43 of the Federal Constitution, upon loss of majority support, he and his entire cabinet shall resign, or ask for the dissolution of Parliament, which he also mentioned just now," he said in a statement posted on Facebook and Twitter, today.

According to Ewon who is also Kadamaian State Assemblyman, Muhyiddin does not have the leadership or competency to manage the pandemic and economic crises but instead has triggered a constitutional crisis.

Muhyiddin should not have blamed other MPs who have withdrawn support, he said, and Opposition MPs who carry out check-and-balance responsibilities on administration, policies, programmes, incompetent SOPs and unemphatic statements toward the people should also not be blamed.

"Don't blame the opposition parties when the parties in your government quarrel with each other, that clearly shows you are incompetent in managing the internal problems of your government!

"I believe that the ninth Prime Minister and his successors can learn from this lesson and revive a more genuine bi-partisan spirit once they are appointed or elected.

"Muhyiddin no longer has the moral ground to offer a bi-partisan spirit as he no longer has the majority. It is no longer genuine as it was solely made for him to remain in power. The offer will not solve the crises that the country is facing," he asserted.
