KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the government to expedite the drafting of a law on cybersecurity to ensure the protection of the nation's digital domain and cyber ecosystem.
Anwar said having a specific law would enable the national Cybersecurity Agency of the National Security Council to exercise clear powers to monitor and enforce laws pertaining to cybersecurity.
"I want to stress that there will be no compromise on national security. This includes the digital domain and the cyber ecosystem," he said in a statement.
He added that the national cybersecurity agency had been appointed as the lead agency for coordinating relevant efforts across various government entities and industries.
He also said that the functions of several other agencies related to cybersecurity would be streamlined to avoid overlapping functions and to maximise efficiency.
Anwar noted that the digital era posed different challenges and the entire government machinery must be better prepared to handle cyberthreats.
"This challenge is not just exclusive to Malaysia but is a global issue. This is because the cyberworld and digital communications are part of our lives.
"Therefore, the national cybersecurity committee meeting is unanimous in wanting (such) a Bill," he said.
