SANDAKAN: The Sung Siew Secondary School Class of 1975 gathered for a memorable golden anniversary reunion on 11th and 12th April 2025, rekindling old friendships and creating new memories.
The event commenced with a heartfelt visit to their alma mater, where former classmates revisited the halls and classrooms that shaped their youth.
A highlight of the school tour was the presentation of a generous donation of RM42,100, collected from former classmates, to support the school’s relocation programme to Mile 4, Jalan Cecily, Sandakan. This donation was also intended to inspire current students to reciprocate with similar gestures in the future.
It is worth noting that the relocation efforts were further strengthened by Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, a former classmate, who played a pivotal role in securing government approvals for the construction of the new school.
The nostalgic journey continued as the group explored the school gallery, reminiscing over old photographs and cherished memories. They also visited the school’s IT laboratory, where STEM subjects, including 3D printing, were taught, showcasing the school's commitment to modern education.
Following the school visit, the group embarked on a two-and-a-half-hour bus ride to the scenic Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort, nestled along the Sukau River. Their stay included two thrilling boat cruises along the river, where proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, hornbills, and eagles were spotted in their natural habitat.
The evening was filled with laughter and camaraderie as the group enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner followed by a lively karaoke session. Classmates sang in Chinese, English, and Kadazan and even danced alongside European tourists who joined in, adding Spanish and Dutch tunes to the mix.
As the reunion drew to a close, heartfelt goodbyes were exchanged, with promises to meet again next year. Lim Kim Hock, the organising committee chairman, expressed deep gratitude to all participants, especially honorary secretary Lo Mui Yee, operations director Chan Kwok Fai, former principal Poh Siew Boon, and Coordinator of the Sung Siew School Board of Management Teoh Ah Nai, for making the event a resounding success.
The Class of 1975 reunion demonstrated that time and distance could not diminish the bonds forged half a century ago; instead, it only served to strengthen them.
