KOTA KINABALU: Sabah state authorities are intensifying their proactive measures to prevent potential rabies outbreaks, ensuring the state maintains its rabies-free status, which has been upheld for more than a century.

According to Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, border control and quarantine measures are being reinforced to prevent the entry of rabies-infected animals from high-risk regions.

"Although Sabah has been free from rabies since 1881, we must remain vigilant. The disease is still prevalent in nearby regions such as Sarawak and Indonesia," Dr Jeffrey stated during the closing ceremony of a rabies simulation exercise organized by the Sabah Department of Veterinary Services on Thursday.

Dr Jeffrey emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and preparedness in preventing the spread of rabies, highlighting that the proximity of rabies-affected areas poses a significant risk to Sabah.

He noted that the simulation training, which involved state agencies and veterinary experts, is crucial for ensuring rapid and effective responses in case of any outbreaks.

Sabah’s government remains committed to upholding stringent measures, which include controlling animal movements across borders and increasing public awareness of the dangers of rabies.

The collaboration between government agencies, local authorities, and the public is vital in preserving the state’s rabies-free status, ensuring the health and safety of its residents and animals.
