SANDAKAN: The Duchess of Kent Hospital’s blood bank here is facing a shortage of blood supplies, specifically Type ‘O’ and ‘B’ blood.
Head of Medicine Transfusion Department Dr Jernih Abdul Rahman said the current supplies would only last about five days.
He said patients now require 15 pints of Type O blood per day and 10 pints of Type B blood per day, while adequate blood supply requires at least 60 pints of Type O blood and 40 pints of Type B blood per day.
Jernih mentioned that the supply is also for patients involved in accidents, premature newborns, cancer, and with thalassemia.
Dr Jernih said this at the Sandakan Lions Club’s Blood Donation Drive on Sunday in collaboration with the hospital’s Department. The drive managed to collect 79 pints of blood.
