KOTA KINABALU: Tanjung Aru Eco Development Sdn Bhd (TAEDSB) has addressed recent concerns regarding table and seat rental fees at the Tanjung Aru Beach hawker center.
In response to viral criticism on social media, TAEDSB General Manager Datuk Jake Jikulin Nointin clarified that the rental fees are part of a legitimate business operation managed by a third-party operator. This operator pays a monthly fee to TAEDSB for the right to operate at the location.
“The public is not obligated to rent the seating facilities,” Jake stated.
“There’s ample space for visitors to enjoy the beach and sunset without incurring any costs.”
He emphasised that the rental fees contribute to the maintenance and cleanliness of the beach area, addressing previous littering issues caused by visitors leaving trash behind.
“These fees help ensure that the area remains clean and enjoyable for everyone,” he added.
Jake also expressed disappointment with some tour bus operators who are violating rules and regulations regarding parking at Tanjung Aru Beach and Prince Philip Park. “We have noticed that certain tour buses are avoiding the RM10 entrance fee by dropping off passengers by the roadside. This not only causes significant traffic congestion but also poses safety hazards for pedestrians and motorists,” he explained.
He further pointed out the environmental impact of these actions, as the heavy vehicles contribute to road wear and tear.
“The damage caused by these buses ultimately results in increased maintenance costs for TAEDSB,” Jake emphasised.
To tackle this issue, he indicated that TAEDSB may be compelled to implement stricter measures, including limiting the entry of large tour buses to the area.
While TAEDSB is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors, Jake emphasised that behaviours that disrupt public enjoyment and damage amenities cannot be tolerated.
He noted that although the public enjoys free access to Tanjung Aru Beach and Prince Philip Park, it is essential for everyone to respect the space and fellow beachgoers.
“We kindly ask for the public’s cooperation in maintaining our standards and being considerate of our community by refraining from going topless at the beach,” he stated.
