TAKIYUDDIN'S ASSURANCES ON PARLIAMENT RECONVENING UNTRUSTWOTHY - GUAN ENG
26 April 2021
PUTRAJAYA: Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan's assurances that Parliament will reconvene at the right time before or after the end of the Emergency on Aug 1 show no value, said DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng.
He regarded Takiyuddin to be untrustworthy as he has broken his earlier promise to implement a reduction of the voting age from 21 to 18 (Undi18) by July 2021.
"Instead of such meaningless assurances, Takiyuddin should be explaining the reason for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government's perverse refusal to abide by the King's Royal advice, that the Emergency Proclamation does not prevent Parliament from meeting to Permit MPs to perform their check and balance role of government oversight and public scrutiny.
"The PN government has failed to use emergency powers to check and control the third wave of escalating Covid-19 infections until Malaysia is the worst country in ASEAN in the number of cases in per capita terms," he said in a statement today.
According to Guan Eng, suspending parliament clearly has not helped curb the surge of infections nor overcome the current low vaccination rates.
He added the government has been incompetent in its crisis management and practices double standards where punitive fines are implemented against regular citizens while ministers are let off scot-free or punished leniently.
"If Takiyuddin dares to mislead Parliament (over Undi18), how can we have faith in his public statement?”
