KOTA BELUD: The Tamu Desa Sosondoton in Kampung Piasau has undergone significant upgrades, transforming what was once a rustic yet picturesque natural setting into a more functional and inviting space.
The enhancements include well-maintained restroom facilities, providing visitors with essential comfort and convenience. Additionally, shaded areas have been created, offering comfortable spots for relaxation and socialising.
A versatile hall has also been established, designed to accommodate a variety of activities and events. These improvements not only enhance the overall experience for visitors but also ensure that the Tamu Desa Sosondoton serves as a vibrant community hub, blending the beauty of its natural surroundings with modern amenities.
Village Development and Security Committee Chairman (JKKK) of Kampung Piasau, Jolyhame Saran, expressed his gratitude to Kadamaian State Assemblyman Datuk Ewon Benedick for the allocation of RM250,000 dedicated to upgrading the tamu site. Jolyhame acknowledged Ewon's unwavering support and commitment to the welfare of his constituents.
Ewon also serves as the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative (MEDC).
In addition, Jolyhame highlighted the Sabah Tourism Board's contribution of RM20,000 towards the site’s enhancement, expressing appreciation for their support in promoting tourism.
“The site is now approximately 90 percent complete and is already being fully utilised,” he stated, mentioning that there are around 20 stalls, with additional vendors taking advantage of available spaces.
The tamu site, spanning two acres, has served as a traditional marketplace for six years. The Tamu Desa Sosondoton is primarily focused on tourism, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of the river that flows alongside it, as well as the region's locally grown produce.
The market features a diverse selection of food, fresh vegetables, and unique items for sale along the riverbank, attracting visitors who engage with vendors to purchase goods, and the river view.
“The tamu operates every Saturday from 6 AM to 12 noon, followed by a period where vendors and guests can relax and appreciate the refreshing atmosphere and picturesque river views,” Jolyhame shared.
He emphasised that vendors not only value the opportunity to sell their goods but also cherish the experience of spending the day by the riverside, immersed in the vibrant community atmosphere.
Recently, vendors have embraced a return to traditional practices by adopting barter trade, reminiscent of historical norms. This initiative adds a unique and appealing aspect to the tamu, with agreements made between parties for the exchange of goods.
Historically, the tamu served as a gathering place where individuals from various regions would come together to barter items such as resins, dried game meat, rattan, rice, and pickled fish, fostering a system of trade and exchange.
“As the upgrading project nears completion, we hope the tamu will be selected as the venue for the annual Tamu Besar, a significant event on the Sabah Tourism Board's calendar. This platform will allow us to showcase all aspects of our village's traditions, including traditional food, attire, and cultural practices,” Jolyhame stated.
Regarding safety and security, particularly due to the proximity of the river, he reassured that proactive measures have been implemented. Currently, efforts are underway to deepen the river and reinforce the banks.
“We remain vigilant during the tamu days to ensure that there are no incidents that could jeopardise safety,” he noted, especially when tourists are present.
Notably, since the establishment of the tamu, there have been no instances of flooding, highlighting the market's resilience to natural challenges.
