PENAMPANG: In Sabah, the countryside especially where there are waterfalls and crystal-clear streams are many, landowners and entrepreneurs are establishing spots to attract tourists.

Establishing a tourist site in the countryside, with its waterfalls, clear streams, orchards, and charming chalets, brings numerous benefits to the local populace.

This can boost the local economy and create employment opportunities to preserve cultural heritage and foster community bonds.

The advantages are manifold, actually.

This is Crystal Bridge Farm’s thrusts, to promote the beauty of the countryside to tourists and in some ways contribute to the State’s tourism endeavours.

After all, the tourism industry is one of the main income- generating sector in the country.

Simon Boyou, the 34-year-old proprietor of the establishment located at Kg. Kiranau Kibunut Penampang is proud to share his 24-acre fruit farm that boasts a variety of fruit trees.

The farm not only offers a serene environment but also features two guest houses, each comprising three rooms, and three single bedrooms for those seeking a comfortable overnight stay.

Those who don’t want to stay overnight are welcomed to enjoy the shades and pool there for a small fee.

Upon arrival, guests are welcomed to relax and unwind with their families. They can choose to explore the nearby river or indulge in leisurely activities within the compound, such as taking a refreshing dip in one of the pools.

Simon believes that these recreational options provide a delightful experience for his guests.

Simon's dedication to establishing this tourism spot spans over seven years, with significant progress already made. The orchard includes pineapples, durian, Tarap, Bambangan, rambutan, and other fruit trees.

To enhance the visitor experience, he has also constructed small shelters strategically placed under the shade, offering a picturesque view of the river. Sitting in these shelters, guests can immerse themselves in the tranquil ambiance of the countryside, accompanied by the soothing sounds of bubbling water.

If guests are so inclined they can also take a walk on the property especially where it has been cleared off the undergrowth.

The sights of fruit trees in bloom or fruiting can be fascinating and of course, when they are ripe, the establishment will also hold a mini fruit fest for guests. Of course, that has to be discussed with the management.

Other activities that can be held there are social gatherings and camping, Simon said, adding that they can accommodate about 200 people in the whole place including outdoors at any one time.

To enhance the ambience through renovation, the establishment turned to BEEP Plus to acquire the necessary assistance, Simon said, adding that they managed to acquire RM245,000 from the programme. Besides renovation, the funds will go towards purchases of Gen-set, Solar, their PC system and furniture among others.

The Beep Plus programme is part of the Bumiputera Enterprise Enhancement Programme (BEEP) in Malaysia, designed to support Bumiputera entrepreneurs in Sabah and Sarawak.

Administered by SME Corp under the Mikro MADANI programme, it offers special grants to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the region.

This initiative, led by the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives with its Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick aims to provide financial assistance and support to Bumiputera entrepreneurs, fostering their business expansion and contributing to regional economic development.

By focusing on overcoming challenges and barriers to growth, the programme empowers Bumiputera entrepreneurs to thrive and succeed in their ventures.

As such Simon thanked Ewon for his effort in introducing BEEP Plus as it is a significant step towards fostering a vibrant entrepreneurship ecosystem in Sabah and Sarawak.

He said he was thankful for the assistance as equipping young entrepreneurs with the necessary resources and opportunities will ensure a successful endeavour for recipients, adding that it should be continued so more young entrepreneurs like him can kick-start their businesses.
