UMS STAFF CALLED TO BE PREPARE AHEAD OF 2021 CHALLENGES

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) staff are urged to be fully prepared, especially mentally, in facing the challenging year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.


UMS vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin said this is because the pandemic has caused uncertain situation such as the economy crisis.


He explained that the ‘business as usual’ perception is no longer an option, instead UMS staff should be more creative and innovative in implementing their work.


“This is important so that their service delivery is solid and can be improved despite the various challenges.


“Therefore, UMS will continue to improve and enhance its information technology infrastructure so that the information can be delivered swiftly in line with the new norm that we practice,” he said this in his 2021 address, which was broadcasted online on UMS’ social platforms recently.


He further explained that the UMS management will also implement some plans and initiatives related to human resource sustainability plan which aims at improving and strengthening UMS’s staff productivity.


“This is in line with the UMS Strategic Plan in achieving the university’s vision and mission,” he noted.


He is confident that UMS can achieve great success not only in the national level but also at the international level and eventually bring benefit to the country, state and the community.


He also mentioned the contribution that the university had achieved last year during the Covid-19 pandemic such as the creation of COVINIZER – hand sanitiser, the Covi-Pro face shield, the COVID Sampling Chamber and COVID Sanitation Tunnel.


He stated that all products and creation were developed by UMS scientist and engineers.


“All these personal protective equipment (PPE) were donated to the frontliners working in the hospitals, clinics and security forces as well as to the students and staff of UMS,” he said.


"Besides that UMS lecturers and researchers have also helped the community affected by COVID-19 such assisting tomato farmers in Ranau to process their agricultural products and avoid losses," he said.


Additionally, facilities in the UMS research laboratory were also been fully utilised to assist the state government in dealing with the spread of COVID-19.


“The Biosafety Laboratory Level 3 (BSL3) which is located at the UMS Biotechnology Research Institute (IPB) was also used in conducting screening tests to detect COVID-19 sample.


"Together with the laboratory facilities at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and UMS Hospital, the university has implemented more than 4000 COVID-19 screening tests which have help the state government to speed up the COVID-19 screening test results, especially in Sabah," said Taufiq.
