KUALA LUMPUR: The Pakatan Harapan (PH) Presidential Council has accepted the United Kinabalu Progressive Organization (Upko) as a component party of PH.
In a statement released by PH chief secretary Saifuddin Nasution today, he said Upko's participation will be able to strengthen the cooperation of parties from the Opposition bloc in facing the 15th General Election (GE15).
“In the 'Big Tenr' spirit stated in the Port Dickson Decree, PH will continue and strengthen cooperation with Warisan, Pejuang, Upko, PSB, Muda and Independent to ensure that the Opposition block becomes more effective and prepares for GE15.
"As has been previously announced, a meeting of Opposition party leaders will be held in the near future to discuss current the political issues, including preparations for the parliamentary session which will begin on Sept 6," he said.
According to Saifuddin, PH is always open to cooperating with other Opposition parties.
"Upko has made an official request to join PH (and) the presidential council meeting today has made a decision to accept Upko as one of the component parties of PH," he said.
Pakatan Harapan is a combination of multi-ethnic parties consisting of PKR, DAP and Amanah.
Upko, which was originally established in 1994, was a party based on the Kadazandusun Murut community before being reformed into a multiracial party following the resolution of the party congress in 2019.
