KOTA KINABALU: A 53-year-old woman who has received two doses of Covid-19 vaccines on March 6 and March 17 respectively was identified as an index case of a new Covid-19 cluster in Tawau known as the Desa Ranggu cluster.

Sabah's official Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Masidi Manjun said the individual who has been exhibiting Covid symptoms since May 15 tested positive for the virus through symptomatic screening on May 20.

"The index case was believed to have contracted the virus from a social contact who visited several houses for Hari Raya celebration on May 13.

"The individual visited three houses in Taman Desa Ranggu and a house belonging to the in-laws in Kg Jawa Tawau before testing positive for Covid-19 on May 22," he said in a statement today.

Following the case, Masidi said a total of 16 other close contacts have tested positive, bringing the cumulative total of cases in the cluster to 18.

"Further investigation on close contact screening is still being actively conducted," he added.
