KIULU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s (GRS) ability to engage assertively yet constructively with the Federal Government has been instrumental in ensuring Sabah’s needs and aspirations are better recognised in Putrajaya, said GRS Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

The incumbent Kiulu Assemblyman said GRS’s measured assertiveness and close cooperation with the national unity administration led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have resulted in tangible progress and greater federal attention to Sabah’s development priorities.

“This positive engagement has led to increased allocations and focus on Sabah from the Federal Government. GRS has shown that when we speak with one voice and present Sabah’s priorities clearly and firmly, Putrajaya listens,” Joniston said after meeting Native Chiefs, Assistant Native Chiefs, and village heads in Kiulu on Friday.

He highlighted the Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA) with Petronas as a prime example of how GRS’s diplomatic approach has yielded concrete benefits, allowing greater state participation in the oil and gas industry and securing stronger recognition of Sabah’s rights.

“These achievements stem from consistent dialogue, mutual respect, and political maturity in managing relations between Sabah and Putrajaya,” he said.

Joniston also cautioned against divisive rhetoric, noting that while slogans such as ‘Sabah for Sabahans’ resonate emotionally, meaningful progress depends on translating that sentiment into policies that genuinely benefit the people.

“It’s important to maintain a conducive political climate in Sabah. There’s no point labelling others as ‘Peninsula traitors’ or ‘intruders’ when constructive engagement with federal-based parties remains part of our political reality.

“What matters most is that Sabah continues to be led by Sabah-based parties. GRS has provided the platform to unite these parties under one roof, reflecting the people’s aspiration for local leadership while maintaining a productive relationship with Putrajaya,” he added.

Joniston said GRS aims to sustain this momentum by pursuing initiatives that deliver long-term benefits to the people of Sabah.

“We want to build on this foundation of trust and understanding so that Sabah’s development agenda remains on track,” he said.
