SANDAKAN: The Elopura Marathon Sandakan 2025, held recently, recorded its largest turnout, attracting a record 3,000 runners from across Malaysia and abroad.

This year’s edition carried a strong charitable focus, raising support and awareness for the Malaysian Association of Paediatric Palliative Care (MAPPAC), an NGO dedicated to improving the quality of life for children living with life-limiting illnesses.

Organised by Persatuan Ortopedik Sandakan and the Kinabalu Running Club, the event formed a key component of the Sabah Marathon Series 2025, in collaboration with the Borneo International Marathon and the Tawau Marathon.

Established in 2018, MAPPAC plays a significant role in strengthening paediatric palliative care nationwide. The organisation supports families through home visits, therapy, psychosocial assistance, caregiver training and multidisciplinary care. One of its major forthcoming initiatives is the development of Sabah’s first Children’s Hospice, a milestone project set to benefit families across the state.

Participants were also encouraged to learn more and contribute through MAPPAC’s ongoing fundraising and volunteer programmes.

The Elopura Marathon has grown into one of Sabah’s signature sporting events, drawing elite athletes, recreational runners and families. This year’s categories — the Full Marathon (42km), Half Marathon (21km) and 10km, saw robust participation, with the earliest flag-off taking place at 2.00am from the Sandakan Sports Complex.

Runners were treated to scenic routes featuring culturally significant landmarks including St Michael’s Church, the Sandakan Heritage Trail and the JCI Clock Tower, offering a meaningful connection to the city’s heritage.

The event was delivered smoothly with the support of local authorities, tourism bodies and community partners. The Organising Committee expressed its appreciation to all sponsors, partners and more than 200 volunteers whose contributions ensured a safe and successful event.

Race Director Dr Timothy Cheng said the marathon had grown far beyond a sporting event.

“This year’s Elopura Marathon represents more than just a sporting event — it is a powerful movement of compassion. With 3,000 runners rallying behind MAPPAC, we are proving that Sandakan stands united for children and families in need. Thank you to every partner, volunteer and runner who made this the biggest and most meaningful edition yet.”

The Elopura Marathon Sandakan is held annually at the Sandakan Sports Complex to promote community health, encourage running culture and support charitable initiatives. As part of the Sabah Marathon Series, the event continues to expand its reach, attracting participants both locally and internationally.
