SANDAKAN: Kampung Sim Sim was filled with colour and patriotic spirit as the judging for the annual Decorated Hut Competition, held in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day 2025, took place recently.

Residents transformed bridges and communal spaces with vibrant decorations and dazzling lights, creating a festive atmosphere that celebrated both creativity and togetherness. The competition has become a much-anticipated highlight for the local community each year.

The event aims to foster unity, nurture patriotism, and encourage community collaboration in celebrating these national occasions. It also provides a platform for residents to express their creativity in enhancing their surroundings.

Tg Papat State assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung remarked, “This competition not only enlivens the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, but also reflects the strong sense of cooperation and solidarity among Kampung Sim Sim residents, which is truly admirable.”

Liau Fui Fui Jetama Chairperson echoed this, saying: “The creativity and patriotic spirit shown across every bridge and neighbourhood are truly impressive. May this spirit continue to thrive in strengthening our community bonds.”

The announcement of winners and prize presentation, originally planned for Malaysia Day on 16 September, was postponed due to the recent natural disaster crisis which disrupted water and electricity supplies. The decision was made as a gesture of solidarity with affected communities, ensuring the celebrations remain rooted in the wellbeing of the people.

The programme was organised by the N.56 Tanjong Papat Service Centre, with Frankie and Liau visiting each decorated bridge and neighbourhood during the judging.

The panel of judges comprised representatives from Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), and Monica Studio, who carefully evaluated the decorations.
