KOTA KINABALU: KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital has officially held a soft launch for its newly upgraded paediatric unit, the Little Island Ward, marking a significant step forward in enhancing child-centred healthcare services in Sabah.
Designed to provide a comforting, safe and welcoming healing environment, the Little Island Ward is inspired by a vibrant undersea theme.
Colourful marine elements have been thoughtfully incorporated to create a joyful and calming atmosphere, helping to ease the hospital experience for young patients and their families.

The soft launch was officiated by Dr Lim Keok Tang, Medical Director of KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital, together with Mr Mohamad Faizal Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer of KPJ Sabah.
Their presence underscored the hospital’s continued commitment to strengthening specialised healthcare services for the community.
The event began on a lively and heart-warming note with a special dance performance by the paediatric nursing team, joined by Dr Joanne Lee, Resident Consultant Paediatrician. The performance created a cheerful atmosphere that delighted both children and parents in attendance.
To further engage families, the hospital organised a series of interactive and educational activities throughout the event. These included a Creative Corner featuring canvas bag painting to encourage children’s creativity in a therapeutic setting, a meet-and-greet session with Dr Liaw Yun Haw, Consultant Paediatrician, which allowed parents and children to interact directly with a specialist, and a guided ward tour showcasing the VIP and Single Rooms, highlighting the ward’s child-centric design and enhanced comfort.
Additional activities included a Hand Hygiene Awareness Booth aimed at promoting good personal hygiene practices among children and families, as well as a Friendly Corner with paediatric nurses to foster interaction and build trust between young patients and the healthcare team.
The launch of the Little Island Ward reflects KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its facilities, expand specialised paediatric services, and create a supportive and nurturing environment for children and their families.
The soft launch also lays the groundwork for the introduction of more comprehensive paediatric care initiatives in the near future.
