KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, has voiced strong support for stricter enforcement in Sabah’s tourism sector, following recent surprise inspections in Tawau and Semporna that revealed serious safety and regulatory breaches.
Speaking after attending the opening of Tree Have Gold, a new four-storey tourism attraction in Kota Kinabalu, Chan welcomed the initiative as a step forward in diversifying Sabah’s tourism offerings. The venue features the world’s largest orangutan replica, and showcases Sabah-made products including durian and bird’s nest items, local handicrafts, a café, and a permanent Jesselton Artisan Market.
“This is a fine example of how tourism players in Sabah are evolving and adding value. However, the wider industry must also raise its standards to preserve Sabah’s reputation as a world-class destination,” he said.
Chan commended Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, for leading recent enforcement operations that uncovered violations such as boat overloading, unlicensed tour operators, inadequate safety equipment, and the existence of illegal resorts.
The minister has since ordered a series of corrective measures, including the closure of illegal resorts, compulsory insurance coverage, mandatory use of life jackets, the establishment of medical posts on islands, and enhanced local enforcement.
“For Sabah’s tourism sector to thrive sustainably, safety and compliance cannot be compromised. Without proper oversight, repeated violations will erode tourist confidence and damage Malaysia’s international image,” Chan stressed.
He urged all stakeholders to view these measures as essential steps toward elevating Sabah not only as a destination of natural and cultural richness, but also as one known for safety, professionalism, and reliability.
