PENAMPANG: The efforts of the Sabah Karate Association (SKA) and the Malaysian Karate Federation (MAKAF) in promoting the sport at both national and international levels is commendable.

In a speech read on his behalf by Political Secretary Carl Mosoom, Penampang Member of Parliament who is also Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Corporative (MEDC) Datuk Ewon Benedick expressed pride and appreciation while highlighting the dedication of SKA under the leadership of Datuk Jake Jikulin Nointin, noting that once again Sabah has been entrusted to host a prestigious karate tournament.

“I am proud of the commitment demonstrated by SKA, as MAKAF has entrusted Sabah with organising this important event once more,” he said.

He also extended his gratitude to MAKAF for continuously providing opportunities for Sabah to host national championships, which are vital for the development of karate in the region. The event serves as a platform for athlete selection and a crucial arena for referees to assess performance and update their knowledge, especially regarding the latest regulations from the World Karate Federation (WKF).

Ewon emphasised that the combined efforts of athletes, coaches, and referees exemplify the unique qualities of karate, which should be nurtured to promote further growth of the sport both nationally and internationally.

He lauded Sabah’s own karate star, Lovely Anne Robberth, who has made a mark on the world stage in the Individual Kata category. “I am very proud of her achievements and the dedication of everyone involved in the development of this sport,” he said.

Ewon expressed hope that MAKAF would continue supporting local athletes as they prepare for the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand.

Looking forward, he called for stronger collaboration between MAKAF and SKA, not only to advance sports development but also to enhance Sabah’s potential as a hub for sports tourism. With its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, Sabah is well-positioned to host international championships and conferences.

He concluded his remarks by urging all parties to work together to strengthen sports and boost the nation’s economy through organised programmes like these. As Sabah prepares to celebrate the Kaamatan Festival at the end of the month, he also took the opportunity to wish everyone a joyful and prosperous festival.
