Multilingual youth targeted by international fraud syndicates - Goh

26 July 2024

SANDAKAN: Tan Sri T.C Goh, President of The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong), has raised concerns about Malaysian Chinese youths being targeted by international fraud syndicates due to their multilingual skills.

Goh said that these syndicates exploit the language proficiency of Malaysian Chinese youths, making them vulnerable to engaging in illegal activities. He emphasised the use of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), by these syndicates to facilitate their fraudulent schemes.

Speaking at an anti-fraud and anti-drug seminar at the Sandakan Community Hall, Goh, who is also the Chairman of the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), Sabah Liaison Committee, stressed the importance of addressing this issue.

The seminar, co-organised by MCPF Sabah Chapter, Sabah police, and University Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sandakan Campus, featured keynote speakers including Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun and Professor Azwan Awang from UMS.

Goh pointed out that Malaysian Chinese youths, particularly in Sabah, are targeted due to their proficiency in languages like English, Mandarin, Hokkien, and Hakka, making them attractive to fraud syndicates.

He warned about common fraud tactics that exploit individuals' desires for financial gain or romantic relationships, urging vigilance and self-awareness.

Highlighting the evolving nature of fraud schemes, Goh stressed on the need for public awareness and prudent financial management. He cautioned against falling for online investment scams and human trafficking schemes, urging individuals to avoid overspending and cultivate good saving habits.

On anti-drug initiatives, Goh highlighted the collaborative efforts between MCPF Sabah, police, and other law enforcement agencies to combat drug abuse. These efforts include community engagement, awareness campaigns, and seminars in schools featuring anti-drug ambassadors to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse.
