MEMBAKUT: Rowindy Lawrence Odong has emerged as a prominent figure in Sabah’s political arena, particularly for the DUN Membakut constituency, representing United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO).
She is recognised as an active and dedicated young female leader, closely connected with the grassroots communities in Membakut.
Rowindy, who hails from Kampung Bandau, Membakut, has been actively involved with UPKO since 2010. She has also served as a Special Officer to the Minister of Rural Development Sabah and possesses government administrative experience as a Board Member of TEKUN Nasional, demonstrating her expertise in governance and development.
Within UPKO, Rowindy has been entrusted with several important roles, including responsibilities in international relations. She also serves as the President of the Rural Women Entrepreneurs Development Association of Sabah (USHWANE), highlighting her commitment to women’s empowerment and rural community development.
Her candidacy reflects UPKO’s strategy to promote young female leaders who are closely connected to local communities. As a local of Membakut, she deeply understands the realities and challenges of the area, from basic infrastructure to employment opportunities.
“In the past, I was asked to contest as the only female candidate at very short notice, and although I was not successful in PRU15, I continued to serve the community. I believe that experience has strengthened my readiness for the upcoming election,” she said.
“Sabah First, Membakut First.”
With the mandate given by the people of Membakut, she is determined to ensure that the principle of “Membakut First” is applied in all development planning, policy decisions, and priorities she advocates. This approach aligns with UPKO’s “Sabah First” vision.
“In the Assembly, I will speak and fight tirelessly to ensure that Membakut’s interests are always prioritise, from funding allocations and development projects to policies that directly impact the lives of the people,” she added.
For the upcoming Sabah state election, Rowindy stated that if given the mandate, she will focus on comprehensive development for Membakut, including infrastructure, education, family recreation facilities, tourism, and basic community needs. She is also known for her commitment to women and youth, particularly single mothers and young people who have limited support.
Although Membakut still faces challenges in infrastructure and socio-economic opportunities, Rowindy is confident that with her experience, grassroots connections, and leadership, positive change can be achieved.
With her political training, experience in rural development, government administration, and deep understanding of the local community, Rowindy is well-positioned to serve as a bridge between the people and policymakers, especially on issues of development and the specific needs of women and youth.
