KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Dive Squad Club has evolved into a prominent force for marine conservation and community diving in the state, its president Sim Fui said following his re-election during the club’s Annual General Meeting yesterday.

As of April 2025, the club—also known as Deus Diving Club (DDC)—boasts 111 members and has organised more than 30 diving and conservation activities since its establishment in 2022.

These initiatives include underwater clean-ups, coral planting efforts, and sustainable diving awareness campaigns carried out across Sabah’s coastal regions.

“Our club has continued to thrive as a passionate community of divers bound by shared values: adventure, marine stewardship, and respect for the underwater world,” Sim said.

Among its most notable undertakings was a marine clean-up held on 28 July 2024 at Mari-Mari Sepanggar Island, where 28 DDC divers collectively removed over 100 kilogrammes of marine debris. The initiative was partially funded through a RM6,000 grant raised during the Lions Club Fundraising Bazaar.

The club has also strengthened its impact through strategic collaborations, including a joint effort with the Royal Malaysian Navy, Sabah Parks, and more than 130 divers in the Borneo Ultra Ocean Cleanup.

Sim said DDC’s growing list of partners—among them Reef Check Malaysia, Marine Research Foundation (MRF), Malaysia Mermaid Club, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), local dive operators, and marine authorities—has allowed the club to amplify its conservation impact.

“These partnerships enable us to scale our efforts and extend our impact across Sabah and beyond,” he said.

In addition to on-ground activities, DDC has become a vocal advocate for marine conservation via traditional and digital media platforms, raising awareness on the importance of ethical and responsible diving while defending Sabah’s marine biodiversity.

“With strong momentum and a growing network of allies, DDC is poised to make even greater strides in ocean conservation while inspiring the next generation of responsible divers,” Sim said.

The newly elected committee for the 2025/2026 term is led by Sim Fui as President, with Dr Ashley Dong serving as Vice President. Lim Wuang Ching takes on the role of Secretary, while Cherilyn Epol has been appointed Treasurer.

The Membership Directors are Sherrie Pui Sinn Yung and Lok Chui Han. Olivia Miwil is the Marketing and Communications Director, while Yong Lip Khiong takes on the role of Programme Director. Ting Shyh Tern is the Public Relations Director, and Venisa Tai Hui Shen the Collaboration Partner Coordinator.
