KENINGAU: Fifty participants, including youths, women, and local community members, took part in a Basic Linangkit Sewing Workshop held at the Bingkor Baru Village Open Hall yesterday.

The event was organised by the Keningau Cultural Association (KenCA) in collaboration with the Dusun Kujau Association of Sabah (PDKS) as part of the Keningau Ethnic Cultural Empowerment Programme. The initiative aims to strengthen and preserve the traditional arts and cultural heritage of the local community.

The workshop focused on basic sewing techniques and traditional Linangkit patterns, a fine woven craft that symbolises the unique identity of the Dusun and Murut communities in Sabah’s interior. Participants learned the artistic and cultural significance of Linangkit while exploring its potential as a source of income.

Six instructors led by Noemi Takun Lantayan conducted the workshop, providing hands-on guidance on the use of traditional materials and colours inspired by local culture.

The workshop was officiated by the Chairman of the Keningau District Tourism and Cultural Association, Rafie Datuk Robert, and attended by the Chairman of the Keningau Cultural Association, Mohd Zaki Zakaria.

The event was supported by the Keningau District Community Mobilisers Association and the Bingkor Membangun Bersama Rakyat (BMBR) Secretariat, with full backing from the Keningau District Tourism and Cultural Association.

Rafie said Linangkit is more than just an adornment for clothing, describing it as a symbol of perseverance, artistry, and ethnic identity that must be preserved and continued by the younger generation.

The programme concluded with a group photo and the presentation of certificates to all participants.
