KENINGAU: True compassion from a leader is not only shown in times of triumph, but most meaningfully in moments of loss.
Yesterday, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan, Deputy Chief Minister I of Sabah, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, as well as Member of Parliament for Keningau and State Assemblyman for Tambunan, paid a solemn visit to the home of the late Naimie Datuk OKK G.S Sundang, 82, in Kampung Kali, Keningau.
His presence was more than a gesture of condolence; it was a tribute to a family whose contributions are indelibly inscribed in the history of Sabah.
The late Naimie was the youngest daughter of the late Datuk OKK G.S Sundang, a towering figure in Sabah’s journey to nationhood.
A key proponent in the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, Datuk OKK G.S Sundang was also the visionary behind the Batu Sumpah Keningau, a historic stone monument that symbolises the solemn promises made to the people of Sabah, now a cornerstone of the state’s collective identity.
Naimie, though more private in life, remained a dignified bearer of her father’s enduring legacy. Her passing marks the end of an era, yet her life serves as a reminder of the sacrifice, vision, and courage that shaped the foundations of modern Sabah.
Among those present to offer their respects were Kerry Chee, Chief of the STAR Sabah Women’s Wing; Raffie Datuk Robert, Chief of GRS Youth Keningau; and staff from the P.180 Keningau People’s Service Centre.
Sincere condolences were extended to the bereaved family. Though deeply felt, this loss also renews collective memories of a family whose service to Sabah will never be forgotten. Their legacy remains enshrined not only in monuments, but in the hearts and history of the people.
