SANDAKAN: The skies above Kampung Sim Sim were filled with vibrant colours as the Brunei Edition 2025 Kite Festival drew crowds of participants and residents over the two-day event from 30 to 31 August.

Organised by Pemuda Jambatan 21 Kampung Sim Sim, the festival revived the traditional folk pastime while uniting the community in a celebration of creativity and skill. Participants showcased kites of various designs, with prizes awarded for the most beautiful creations on the final day.

The competition highlighted not only artistry in kite-making but also the joy of shared tradition, as families and visitors gathered to watch the colourful displays take flight.

State Assemblyman for Tanjong Papat and Chairman of Sabah Development Berhad, Datuk Poon Ming Fung @ Frankie, officiated the opening by flying a traditional Malay kite, symbolising the event’s cultural roots.

He was later represented by KAN Jifri Amat at the closing ceremony to present prizes to the winners.

The organisers said the festival successfully rekindled a pastime handed down through generations while strengthening community bonds in Kampung Sim Sim.
