KOTA BELUD: Nestled in the heart of lush greenery, along the serene banks of the crystal-clear Panataran River, lies a picturesque tourism site called Nohutu Eco-Tourism, Melangkap Tiong that captivates the senses with the beauty of nature around it.

This gem is a haven for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and photography enthusiasts alike, offering an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Loraine Sariou, who runs the tourism site shares that one of the most attractive sights for tourists here is when dawn breaks. The fresh morning air envelops visitors, invigorating their spirits and awakening their senses.

The gentle sound of the flowing river harmonises with the soft rustle of leaves, creating a soothing symphony that beckons them to linger a little longer.

“The best sight is the majestic Mount Kinabalu that can be seen from our tourism site. I believe photography buffs will love the site. Some photography angles will make it seem like the scene are overseas in some temperate country,” she shares.

According to her, the ambiance of the tourist spot is the main attraction as well as the river.

“For those looking to enhance their experience with an overnight stay, a variety of accommodation options are available.

"Guests can choose from five charming bamboo chalets or opt for one of the four unique hobbit-style lodgings.

"Additionally, there are two rooms located in the community hall for those seeking a more communal atmosphere. The hall can accommodate about 80 people and ideal for talks or small gatherings. For a more rustic experience, a spacious camping area is also provided,” Loraine shares.

The property is beautifully situated near a river, and visitors can enjoy swimming at a designated area known as the Lagoon, where they can relax along the banks.

For those interested in exploring, a scenic trail winds around the nine acres of the property, offering a perfect opportunity for a leisurely walk. As twilight descends, guests can enjoy the enchanting sight of fireflies dancing in the evening air.

“For tourists seeking a cultural immersion, it can be arranged upon request. Guests will have the opportunity to experience local dances, such as the Sumayau and Mongigol,” Loraine says.

Additionally, traditional meals can be prepared upon request.

“In the past, we have engaged tourists in activities like vegetable picking and cooking, allowing them to experience our culinary traditions firsthand,” Loraine explains.

Nohutu Eco-Tourism, located within the Melangkap Tourism area, is a highly sought-after destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in a serene, invigorating environment.

Being near the picturesque river, maybe a plus for tourists but this establishment prioritises safety, particularly given the river's prominence as a key attraction.

Loraine emphasises their unwavering commitment to safety. She advises all visitors swimming in the river or approaching the water's edge to exercise caution and return to safer ground immediately if necessary.

The establishment is particularly vigilant about potential water surges that may occur during heavy rainfall in the mountains upstream, ensuring guests can enjoy their experience with peace of mind.

“We have faced significant challenges in the past,” she shared, reflecting on the tumultuous events that have impacted their operations.

“The earthquake in 2015 was particularly devastating, as it severely affected our river. Following that, the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to halt our operations, and in 2022, we experienced another flood.”

Despite these setbacks, she remains steadfast in her commitment to the venture, believing wholeheartedly that it is a worthy pursuit.

Regarding developing her eco-tourism site, she emphasised the need for reliable electricity supply to enhance guest comfort and improve overall experiences.

Additionally, she noted that the road infrastructure requires significant upgrades.

“We hope to secure these essential facilities for our eco-tourism site, as they will greatly enhance our service and allow us to provide a more enjoyable experience for our visitors.”
