TUARAN: More than 100 farmers gathered at Padang Istiadat here on Friday as Sabah’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Datuk Jamawi Jaafar, conducted a live fruit tree grafting demonstration aimed at nurturing future nursery entrepreneurs.
The session formed part of the Kitchen Garden Initiative programme, which is scheduled to be officially launched by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Saturday (15 February).
Accompanied by his wife, Jamawi demonstrated grafting techniques using the QAV1 avocado variety, as well as Tupai King and Musang King durian varieties. The hands-on session enabled farmers to observe proper techniques and gain practical knowledge on cultivation and plant care.
Participants were also given the opportunity to engage directly with the minister to seek further clarification on planting methods and crop management.
Between 100 and 150 saplings of the three varieties were distributed free of charge to attendees, with basic planting tools also provided to support their efforts.
Jamawi expressed hope that the knowledge shared would translate into tangible results.
“My hope is as high as the mountain that all of you will one day become nursery entrepreneurs. If not, at least become durian growers from the seedlings you receive today,” he said.
The programme also featured a freshwater fish fry session hosted by Tenghilan Fish Valley and a demonstration on alternative poultry feed production conducted by Bolashi and Azolla, highlighting broader agricultural opportunities.
Also present were the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Datuk Leonard Stephen Poyong, Deputy Permanent Secretary Maria David Edick, senior managers of departments and agencies under the ministry, and other officials.
Jamawi later toured exhibition booths set up in conjunction with the event, underscoring the ministry’s continued efforts to empower farmers and promote agricultural entrepreneurship across the state.
