KOTA KINABALU: Junior Chamber International (JCI) continues to stand as a vital platform for shaping young leaders, fostering not only confidence and competence, but also a deep-rooted sense of purpose and community service.
This was the resounding message delivered by Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu, Datuk Chan Foong Hin during JCI Luyang leadership transition event.
Having begun his own political journey at a young age, the Deputy Minister shared his appreciation for JCI's role in preparing youths to lead with conviction and to serve with heart.
“The work JCI does, whether in leadership development, civic engagement, or community outreach, aligns seamlessly with the national need for a new generation of young Malaysians who are unafraid to speak up, step up, and drive meaningful change,” he said.
In commending the outgoing Board of Directors for their contributions and welcoming the new team, the Minister encouraged them to embrace the opportunity to grow and make an impact beyond the organisation.
“Let this new term be one guided by vision, unity, and courage. You are not just leading within JCI, but also shaping the wider community,” he added.
Describing JCI as more than just a youth movement, Chan emphasised its function as a "leadership pipeline" for the country. In his role as a public servant, he has observed first-hand the tangible impact of JCI initiatives on the ground, from empowering youth to driving sustainable community programmes.
He expressed eagerness to deepen collaboration between JCI Luyang and his parliamentary office, particularly in community outreach during festive periods.
“Let us work together to ensure no community is left behind. Our shared values in community upliftment and inclusive development make this a natural partnership,” he said.
One of JCI Luyang’s standout initiatives, the Moonlight Giving programme, also received ministerial support. The Deputy Minister announced his backing of the campaign through the sponsorship of SAJI Cooking Oil, a homegrown Malaysian brand under FGV Holdings Berhad.
“SAJI is among the few domestically produced cooking oil brands, offering premium palm olein that’s ideal even for festive delicacies such as mooncakes,” he noted.
“Its neutral flavour and moisture-retaining qualities make it a perfect local alternative to imported oils.”
He highlighted the collaboration as an example of how government, private industry, and civic organisations can come together to reinforce community values and national pride.
In his closing remarks, the Deputy Minister urged all JCI members to recognise the value of their contributions.
“Never underestimate the power of your projects, your voice, or your ideas. Malaysia’s future will be shaped by youth like you, those who serve with integrity, think creatively, and act decisively.”
“As your elected representative, I remain committed to supporting youth-led initiatives that bring about positive change. Investing in you is investing in the future of our nation,” he concluded.
