Malaysia Represented at the State Funeral of the Late Pope Francis in Vatican City

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Government is represented by the Minister of Law and Institutional Reform in the Prime Minister's Department, Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said and Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick at the State Funeral of the late Pope Francis, scheduled to take place on 26 April 2025 in Vatican City.
The State Funeral will commence with a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re.
Following the Mass, a ceremonial procession will escort His Holiness’s remains to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, where he will be laid to rest in a private interment.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also expressed his condolences on the passing of Pope Francis on 21 April 2025.
In his message, the Prime Minister paid tribute to his profound contributions to interfaith dialogue, environmental stewardship, and the defence of the marginalised.
On 23 April 2025, Datuk Ewon Benedick signed the Book of Condolences at the Apostolic Nunciature in Kuala Lumpur, on behalf of the Government of Malaysia.
