KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has resorted to lockdown implementation following a nationwide spike in Covid-19 cases.

In a statement today, he said the decision was made during the National Security Council (MKN) Special session on Covid-19 Management which he chaired today.

The implementation will take effect from Wednesday (May 12) to June 6.

"With Covid-19 daily caseload exceeding 4,000, the number of active cases standing at 37,369 and 1,700 deaths reported to date, Malaysia is facing a third wave which could spark a national crisis.

"The Government decided to take drastic measures following new variants with higher infectivity rate, constraints in public health system capacity, and low SOP compliance among the community," he said.

With the movement control order (MCO) in place, Muhyiddin stated that inter-district and inter-state travels are not allowed except for emergency, health, work and economic purposes as well as vaccination appointment and long-distance couples.

All social gathering activities such as religious gatherings, wedding and engagement receptions, and dinner events, among others, are also not allowed.

However, wedding ceremonies are allowed with the number of attendance and SOP determined by the state Islamic religious authorities for Muslims and the National Registration Department for non-Muslims.

"All sports and recreational activities are also not allowed except for individual activities in an open space such as jogging, cycling and exercising with social distancing observed.

"All education institutions will be closed but an exception will be given to students who will be sitting for international examinations.

"Daycare centres, pre-schools and kindergartens are allowed to operate in adherence to SOP to assist working parents and guardians."

Only three persons, including the driver, are allowed in private vehicles, taxis and e-hailings.

For commercial vehicles carrying goods and are involved in economic or industrial activities, the number of people allowed in a vehicle depends on the number allowed in the registration license

The number of passengers in public transport depends on the capacity with social distancing and SOP in place.

Dine-in in eatery outlets are also not allowed, however, the public can opt for drive-through and takeaways.

"It is mandatory for employers to implement the Work-From-Home (WFH) policy with only 30 per cent attendance of management staff at any one time.

"WFH for civil servants will be determined by the guidelines issued from time to time by the National Head Secretary," Muhyiddin said.

For Hari Raya Aidilfiitri, house-to-house and graveyard visits are strictly prohibited, while Sunnah Aidilfitri prayer in mosques and suraus are allowed with only 50 people at any one time for premises with a capacity of 1,000 people, and 20 for capacity that allows less than 1,000 people.

A similar number of individuals allowed also apply for obligatory and Friday prayers.

The SOP for non-Muslim houses of worship will also be enhanced and determined by the Ministry of National Unity.

"Throughout this period, all economic sectors are allowed to operate."
