KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's pétanque athletes brought home two gold medals during the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Sarawak.
The two gold medals were won in the Women’s Triples event, where Sabah triumphed over Johor with a score of 11-4, and in the Mixed Triples event (one man and two women), where they defeated Sarawak 11-9.
The athletes who contributed to the two gold medals are Thadis Henhera, Ellyshatul Balqis and Marysa for the Women’s Triples event, while Maxivianna, Vivianah and Muhammad Aeqhmal represented Sabah in the Mixed Triples event.
When met in Miri after their victory, the athletes expressed their gratitude to the Sabah Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), the Sabah Sports Council (MSN), the Sabah Boules Sports Association (PSBS), the University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF), and all parties that supported and backed pétanque in Sabah.
The President of the Sabah Boules Sports Association, Morsede Mohamad, who is also a staff member of UCSF, congratulated all the athletes competing in SUKMA Sarawak 2024.
"This time, the Sabah pétanque athletes successfully brought home two gold medals. We hope to perform even better in SUKMA 2026 to collect more medals for Sabah.
"I also extend my appreciation to UCSF for their ongoing support for the development of pétanque in Sabah," he said.
UCSF Vice Chancellor Dr. Rafiq Idris, when approached, congratulated all the Sabah pétanque athletes for their achievement in winning two gold medals.
"Indeed, pétanque is a sport that is increasingly popular among the youth in Sabah. UCSF is quite synonymous with this sport. From the university's perspective, like other sports, we always support the development of sports in Sabah," he said.
