KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his warm congratulations to President-elect Lee Jae-myung on his election as the new President of the Republic of Korea, describing it as a pivotal moment for the country.
In a post on Facebook, Anwar commended South Korea for demonstrating resilience and democratic resolve following a period of intense political contest and scrutiny.
He also conveyed Malaysia’s readiness to work with President Lee’s administration to further strengthen bilateral ties.
“I welcome the opportunity to work with President Lee to deepen the friendship between our nations, especially in trade and technology, in peace and security, and in the enduring ties between our peoples,” he said.
Anwar noted that bilateral relations were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024, a move that reflects shared ambitions between Malaysia and South Korea.
The Prime Minister further urged for a greater role for ASEAN in Seoul’s regional policy, particularly as both countries prepare to lead major regional platforms this year.
“As Chairs of ASEAN and APEC respectively in 2025, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea are well-positioned to lead impactful regional initiatives.
“In a time of global flux, deeper partnership between Southeast Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all,” he said.
Anwar added that he looks forward to meeting President Lee at the ASEAN-led Summits in Kuala Lumpur this October and at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju.
“Malaysia wishes him wisdom and success in the journey ahead,” he said.
President Lee Jae-myung, from the liberal Democratic Party, was elected as South Korea’s 21st president following his victory in Tuesday’s presidential election.
