KENINGAU: The arrival of construction materials at the Sungai Liawan bridge site in Kampung Samalang yesterday marks the long-awaited resumption of a key infrastructure project, bringing significant relief to the local community.
The bridge, a vital alternative route linking surrounding villages to the town of Keningau, is heavily relied upon by students, government employees, and private sector workers.
The construction of a new structure replaces the previous low-level crossing, which become impassable during periods of flooding, severely disrupting mobility and daily activities.
Key construction materials delivered to the site include three lorry loads of UBG1500 components and 26 Dura parapet wall panels. This development has renewed public optimism that the route will soon be fully restored to operational status.
The delay in the project had prompted firm intervention by the Liawan State Assemblyman, Datuk Annuar Ayub Aman, who raised the matter in the State Legislative Assembly.
He subsequently held discussions with the appointed contractor and the Keningau Public Works Department (JKR) to ensure that construction progresses according to a revised and closely monitored schedule.
In a further show of federal commitment, Deputy Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, conducted an official site visit to the previously stalled project. His presence provided reassurance to residents that the project is a priority and will be expedited towards completion.
“With continued monitoring, a structured work plan, and strong inter-agency coordination, we are confident this project will be completed within the near future,” said a spokesperson from the Liawan constituency office.
“Its completion will alleviate congestion, especially during the monsoon season, and restore seamless daily travel for the community.”
“We are very relieved and grateful. Annuar’s presence among the people gives us confidence that our needs are being taken seriously,” said local resident Victor Micheal of Taman Perumahan Muhibbah.
The Sungai Liawan bridge is expected to be completed in the coming months, restoring a vital link for the community and contributing to greater resilience in the region’s transport infrastructure.
