KOTA KINABALU: Visitor safety is paramount as Sabah prepares to welcome travellers for Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2026, said Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jeffrey Jimit.

“Safety is a key factor in how people choose their destination, and STB shares the responsibility of ensuring Sabah is seen as a safe and reliable place.

“When visitors know they are in good hands, it builds their confidence and enhances their overall experience—this is why today’s programme is so important,” he said at the closing of the second defensive driving course held at the Sabah International Convention Centre.

The course was organised by the Sabah Enhanced Travel Innovation Association (SETIA) to equip drivers ahead of VMY 2026. The two-day training was conducted by Sabah Skills and Technology Centre (SSTC) trainer Jason Richard Rajah.

Julinus said drivers and guides play a vital role in shaping a visitor’s first impression, as they are often the earliest point of contact.

“The way they carry out their duties and ensure comfort and safety on the road significantly influences how visitors perceive Sabah,” he said.

He added that the aim is to ensure tour drivers and guides are well-trained, confident, and prepared for all road situations.

“This keeps them safe, protects the guests who rely on them, and reflects the professionalism we strive for across the tourism sector,” he said.

Julinus also noted that STB is working to elevate Sabah’s visibility both domestically and internationally.

“By preparing our frontliners well, we can present Sabah as a welcoming, well-managed destination capable of delivering memorable and safe experiences.

“This will help us showcase Sabah during VMY 2026 as a destination that exceeds expectations,” he said, adding that plans are underway for a Visit Sabah Year 2027.

He reaffirmed STB’s commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen the industry and reinforce Sabah’s reputation as a safe and trustworthy destination.

“As I often tell overseas visitors, your journey to Sabah is not just an ordinary trip—it is a homecoming,” he added.

SETIA Chairman Christina Wahida Kong said the defensive driving course was introduced to prepare frontliners for the expected surge in tourist arrivals during VMY 2026 next month.

The first session, supported by STB, was held in September this year. Each session is limited to 15 participants.

“This course will continue as a long-term programme to improve the driving skills of our frontliners, with a strong emphasis on passenger safety,” she said.

“The drivers are the frontliners who ensure the comfort and safety of tourists visiting Sabah. No matter how good your destination is, it will not matter if you do not have properly trained drivers with good conduct,” she added.
