SANDAKAN: Immediate action has been taken to resolve the long-standing water leakage issue at Bandar Prima, following a coordinated effort led by Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Vice President and Sandakan City Councillor, Chong Thien Ming.

Chong, accompanied by Councillor Tang Szu Ching, visited the affected site last month together with representatives from the Jabatan Air Negeri Sabah (JANS), Telekom Malaysia (TM) and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) to assess the source of the problem and determine an effective long-term solution.

“After receiving numerous public complaints, the team excavated the suspected area to inspect the underground water pipes. Upon inspection, we found that the issue was not caused by a burst pipe, as initially believed. Instead, the water had pooled and flowed to a low-lying point, eventually seeping to the surface,” Chong explained.

Weeks of investigation eventually pinpointed the true cause near the entrance road to Taman Tinosa. A follow-up meeting was then held with the JANS Manager, and all relevant agencies were called in for a joint site inspection.

“During the inspection, it was discovered that TM and SESB cables were positioned directly above the leaking pipe. This meant that specialised detection equipment had to be used to determine the exact position of the cables before any repair works could safely proceed,” Chong said.

After several detection rounds, JANS decided the most practical and time-efficient solution was to install a new bypass pipeline, rather than removing or relocating the existing cables.

“Two days ago, I was on-site to monitor the delivery of new piping materials, and installation began the following day. I revisited the area yesterday to check on the progress,” Chong added. “According to JANS, the works should be completed within a week.”

Chong assured residents that he would continue to monitor the project until completion and expressed his gratitude for the patience and cooperation of motorists and local residents affected by the works at the Bandar Prima entrance.
