KOTA KINABALU: With Kapayan emerging as one of the most closely watched constituencies in Sabah, political observers believe that youth engagement may become the deciding factor in the upcoming election, placing unprecedented influence in the hands of first-time and young voters.

United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) candidate Billy Joe Dominic, who faces more experienced rivals, has intensified his appeal to Sabah’s youth, framing their role not merely as participants in the democratic process, but as leaders shaping immediate change.

“For too long, young people have been told to wait their turn,” he said. “But the challenges we face, jobs, development, environmental protection, social equality, are happening now. We need leaders today, not someday. Your vote is the first step in taking that leadership.”

Analysts note that with a significant portion of Kapayan’s electorate falling under the youth category, turnout rates in this demographic could shift the political landscape.

“If the youth bloc mobilises, Kapayan could see a very different outcome,” said one Sabah-based political researcher. “Their priorities and engagement levels will be critical.”

Billy Joe tied his message to UPKO’s “Sabah First” motto, arguing that young Sabahans must play a central role in ensuring that the state’s rights, resources, and opportunities remain prioritised.

“Sabah’s future cannot be shaped without Sabahans, especially young Sabahans, at the table,” he said.

UPKO president Datuk Ewon Benedick, reinforced this narrative, positioning Billy Joe as symbolic of a generational shift within the party.“Billy Joe represents a new wave within UPKO,” Ewon stated. “He has the commitment and ideas that Kapayan needs, and he reflects our effort to elevate young leaders who are ready to serve now.”

Political observers argue that this push aligns with broader regional trends, where younger voters are increasingly demanding representation and accountability rather than accepting gradual change. Billy Joe echoed this sentiment, urging youth not only to vote, but to view themselves as active agents of leadership.

“Don’t wait for someone else to define your future. Sabah needs your ideas, energy, and courage today,” he said. “Leadership begins the moment you decide to step forward.”

With the election approaching, many believe that whether youth voters embrace this role could determine not only the outcome in Kapayan, but set the tone for Sabah’s political trajectory in the years ahead.
