KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) today convened a Special Taskforce Committee Meeting, chaired by the Assistant Minister Dr. Andi Md Shamsureezal  Mohd Saina to address tourism issues in Semporna District, Sabah. This proactive initiative aims to strengthen safety standards and boost confidence among both domestic and international travellers.

The meeting identified several key issues requiring immediate attention, particularly regarding accommodation licensing, safety protocols, and compliance with directives and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) set by authorities. Additionally, the need for more coordinated efforts among relevant agencies was emphasised.

Based on current findings, a total of 190 accommodation premises has been identified as operational in Semporna District. Of these, 45 premises have successfully obtained licences, 59 are in the process of applying for licences, while 86 premises have yet to take any action towards licensing.

In response, KePKAS has set a three-month period for all 86 unlicensed premises to complete their licensing applications and fully comply with legal requirements and established guidelines. Failure to do so within this timeframe will result in further action by the authorities through a coordinated enforcement mechanism.

Simultaneously, KePKAS will compile all SOPs related to tourism safety involving various enforcement and technical agencies. These standardised SOPs will be published and made openly accessible via the official KePKAS website, ensuring clear understanding and comprehensive compliance by tourism industry operators and stakeholders.

Furthermore, KePKAS will conduct a coordinated operation in the near future, in collaboration with enforcement agencies and local authorities, to ensure compliance with licensing, safety SOPs, and the maintenance of safe conditions for travellers.

KePKAS remains committed to ensuring that Semporna District continues to be a safe, well-organised, and competitive tourism destination, in line with the ongoing efforts of the State Government to preserve Sabah’s tourism image at the national and international levels. The safety standards in Semporna District are assured and under control, making it a secure destination for visitors.
