SANDAKAN: A tree-tagging system has been developed with the assistance of the Sabah Forestry Department in preparation for an entry into the Malaysia Book of Records.

The initiative marks the establishment of Malaysia’s First Historical Tree Trail, set to be officially launched on 28 June 2025 by Walter Kenson, President of the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS).

This milestone was announced during a courtesy visit to Datuk Frederick Kugan, Chief Conservator of Forests, by Lai King Hang, Founder and Chairman of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, earlier today.

Over 200 participants from various backgrounds are expected to take part in the event, which will begin at Masjid Jamik.

The trail will include a ceremonial stop at Agnes Keith’s House, where the official presentation of the Malaysia Book of Records certificate will take place.

A total of 42 significant trees along the Sandakan Heritage Trail have been identified, QR-coded, and tagged to enhance visitors’ experience of both the natural and historical heritage of the area.

This landmark achievement for Sandakan is jointly organised by the Sandakan Heritage Trail Committee and the Sandakan Tourism Association (STAN), with full support from the Sandakan Municipal Council and various voluntary organisations.

Also present at the courtesy call were Dr Arthur Chung, Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests and a senior team member of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, along with senior officers from the Sabah Forestry Department, and representatives from STAN and the Sabah Society Sandakan.
