PENAMPANG: Penampang Member of Parliament Datuk Ewon Benedick presented a contribution of 22 lion heads, including two dragon heads, to various associations and lion dance clubs within the Penampang parliamentary constituency in conjunction with the 2026 Chinese New Year celebrations.
Ewon, who is also Deputy Chief Minister III and Minister of Industrial Development and Transport, said the initiative was part of efforts to preserve cultural heritage and strengthen unity in a multi-ethnic society.
“This is an annual programme that I carry out ahead of Chinese New Year every year. This year, in addition to the 22 lion and dragon heads, an additional dragon head was donated by a corporate figure in Penampang,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after officiating at the lion and dragon eye-dotting ceremony here today.
Ewon said the initiative reflects the commitment of local leadership to ensuring that the traditions and cultural heritage of the Chinese community continue to be preserved and passed on to future generations.
“This is a manifestation of ethnic diversity in Penampang and in Sabah that must be upheld and continued as an example to other areas, particularly in strengthening unity and the spirit of mutual respect,” he said.
He also described February as a unique period, as Ramadan begins just two days after Chinese New Year, highlighting Malaysia’s uniqueness as a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation.
“The Christian community will also be entering an important season, Lent, which is the fasting period for Christians, further illustrating the dynamic religious diversity in this country that continues to be preserved through mutual respect.
“We are fortunate that despite differences in background and political views, the people are still able to live together peacefully. There are not many countries in the world that are able to celebrate such diversity,” he said.
“I call on all citizens, despite our political differences, to defend and preserve these cultural traditions, because when we are divided it will affect the Malaysian Federation and the harmony of our country,” he added.
