KUCHING: In light of the ongoing conflicts in Israel, Rev. Datuk Danald Jute, the Bishop of Kuching and President of Mission Schools, Kuching, has urged the Education Ministry to reconsider holding the Palestine Solidarity Week, emphasising the need to keep schools and school children out of this contentious issue.

Rev. Datuk Danald Jute has been approached by numerous Mission Schools in the Diocese of Kuching seeking guidance and advice regarding the recent letters from the Ministry of Education Malaysia and Sarawak State Education Department, dated 21 October 2023 and 23 October 2023 respectively.

The letter, titled "Implementation of Palestine Solidarity Week in Educational Institutions under the Ministry of Education Malaysia," outlined the scheduled dates for the event, from 29 October to 3 November 2023.

Acknowledging the heart-wrenching consequences of the conflict between Hamas and Israel, which has resulted in immense suffering and loss of innocent lives on both sides, including women and children, Rev. Datuk Danald Jute expressed the collective outrage felt by many.

However, he believes that the Ministry of Education Malaysia and Sarawak State Education Department should refrain from organising such an event, as it would be a misuse of valuable time, resources, and energy, not to mention the potential impact on teachers and students involved.

Datuk Danald Jute proposed that the focus should be on promoting peace, understanding, and empathy among students. It is crucial to create a safe and inclusive learning environment that fosters dialogue and respect for diverse perspectives.

He further emphasised that schools should prioritise their primary mission, which is to provide quality education and nurture the intellectual and personal growth of students.
