Dr Fatimah Sabrina Receives UiTM Nusa AIKON 2025 Award for Inspirational Excellence among Persons with Disabilities

SHAH ALAM: Perseverance and sustained contributions towards empowering the community of persons with disabilities (PWDs) have earned Dr Hajah Fatimah Sabrina binti Mohammad, a Sabahan native, the prestigious UiTM Nusa Award for Inspirational Excellence among Persons with Disabilities (AIKON) 2025 at the national level yesterday.
The award was presented during the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Celebration of Persons with Disabilities Day, held at AEON Hall, AEON Mall Shah Alam, in recognition of her outstanding achievements, resilience, and inspirational contributions across multiple fields.
Organised by UiTM’s Division of Services and Development for Persons with Disabilities, the ceremony carried the theme “An Inclusive PWD Society: The Key to Social Progress”, reflecting UiTM’s ongoing commitment to fostering meaningful and inclusive participation of the PWD community within higher education institutions.
The ceremony was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor of UiTM, Professor Datuk Ts Dr Shahrin bSahib @ Sahibuddin, who emphasised the importance of a comprehensive support ecosystem in nurturing competitive, independent, and socially contributing PWD individuals capable of contributing to national development.
Dr Fatimah Sabrina, who has been a person with a physical disability since 2015, is a medical doctor, civil servant, and currently a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
She is also widely recognised as a leading PWD advocate actively spearheading high-impact initiatives across sectors, including healthcare, education, and policy advocacy.
Previously, she served as President of the UiTM Postgraduate Association and is currently deeply involved in community health programmes, advocacy for PWD rights at the policy level, participation in national forums, and strategic collaborations involving government agencies, universities, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
In addition, Dr Fatimah Sabrina serves as President of the Sabah Alzheimer’s Association, which focuses on supporting Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers, and as Deputy Chairperson of the Malaysian Professional Women’s Secretariat, where she champions women’s leadership and social inclusion.
Her active involvement has opened avenues for dialogue, increased public awareness, and expanded participation opportunities for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups in the nation’s development agenda.
Commenting on the recognition, Dr Fatimah Sabrina expressed hope that the award would serve as an inspiration for the PWD community to continue moving forward. She emphasised that every individual possesses inherent value and potential when provided with fair and inclusive opportunities and support.
She added that the AIKON Award also reflects UiTM’s sustained efforts to promote social inclusion, justice, and equality in education and human capital development at the national level.
