KOTA MARUDU: The Sabah State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the state's diverse ethnic communities, known for their unique traditions, customs, and artistic expressions.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the conservation of ethnic cultures is vital to maintaining the state’s identity and ensuring its legacy is passed on to future generations.
“The State Government will continue to support and assist ethnic organisations in safeguarding their customs, arts, and cultural heritage.
“Culture is not merely a historical legacy—it is a development asset that must be protected,” he said while officiating the Rungus Cultural Festival 2025 at the Rungus Cultural Centre, Jalan Teringai, on Sunday.
Hajiji noted that cultural heritage, such as that of the Rungus community, is more than a symbol of tradition. It serves as a unifying force, a tourism draw, and a source of identity and pride, particularly for the younger generation.
He also announced that the State Government would consider a proposal to upgrade Matunggong Sub-District to full district status, subject to a feasibility study by the relevant authorities.
“The Government has taken note of the aspirations of the people of Matunggong and will assess both the infrastructure readiness and overall necessity before making a final decision,” he said.
Hajiji also called on the people of Sabah to continue supporting the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-led State Government in the forthcoming State Election (PRN).
“Many initiatives have been implemented, and continue to be implemented, by the GRS Government for the well-being of the people and the development of Sabah.
“We have a clear development agenda through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap, which focuses on inclusive growth and improving the lives of the rakyat,” he added.
Underscoring the importance of political stability, Hajiji stressed that ongoing public support is essential to ensure that government policies, programmes, and initiatives continue unhindered for the benefit of all communities.
“Let us not look back. Stay with the GRS Government, which has consistently demonstrated its commitment and capability to uplift the people and develop the state inclusively,” he said.
The Chief Minister also praised the Pertubuhan Rungus Bersatu Sabah (PRBS) for its continued efforts in organising the annual Rungus Cultural Festival, which serves as an important platform for promoting and celebrating the cultural identity of the Rungus people.
