KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is championing collaborative, grassroots-led conservation drives, especially in reforestation and habitat restoration, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai declared today.
He stressed that tighter coordination between government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and private sector players is vital to make conservation efforts more effective.
“We face real challenges like habitat fragmentation and environmental pressures, but it’s heartening that many organisations aren’t waiting for matters to deteriorate further. They’re already acting on the ground,” he said at the Reforestation Partners Appreciation Event, hosted by 1Stop Borneo Wildlife here on Thursday (16 April).
Joniston, also Sabah Tourism Board chairman, underscored the duty to safeguard the state’s world-renowned biodiversity amid rapid development and shifting land use.
He praised the steadfast work of groups like KOPEL, APE Malaysia, and BORA, calling their contributions essential to preserving Sabah’s natural ecosystems.
Spotlighting 1Stop Borneo Wildlife’s approach, he noted it transcends mere tree-planting by restoring ecological functions – planting species that lure wildlife back to the fold.
Such initiatives gain strength through ties with bodies like the Forestry Department and Sabah Parks, plus private partners such as Teck Guan Group.
“These alliances are forging wildlife corridors to reconnect fragmented habitats – precisely the teamwork we need more of,” he affirmed.
He further cited urban collaborations with Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and police, where trees sprouting on buildings are relocated and replanted rather than felled.
“This shows how grassroots ideas can become practical realities with official backing,” he added.
Early successes are emerging, with wildlife trickling back to restored zones, signalling the value of sustained, united action.
The state government pledges ongoing support for these partnerships to align efforts and avoid silos.
